Love the Dear Old Snowman. The children all look like the young Famous Five, and the villian guy looks like Jake, from Fall into Adventure. :)

Tony Summerfield wrote:I am getting a bit carried away with this scanning game as I have now done the final Nursery Book in full, The Dear Old Snow Man. It is a slightly quirky title this as I am sure that Enid intended it to be 'Snowman' as that is the title of the first story. However that was scuppered by Eileen Soper with her artwork for both the cover and the title page which that meant that in all good bibliographies the title had to have 'Snow Man' in it!

Thanks very much, Tony! Another beautiful addition to the Cave. As you say, it is curious to have "Snow Man" instead of "Snowman"!

'The Dear Old Snow Man' is enchanting. My children always used to name their snowmen (and snowladies!) and wish they could come to life. I think that that story and 'The Funny Little Shadow' are my favourites of the five. 'The Funny Little Shadow' is alarming and unexpected - the sort of tale that really appealed to me as a child.

'Hurrah for the Pepper-Pot' is a bit like a Beatrix Potter story, though condensed and not as poetically written.

Eileen Soper's illustrations throughout the book are gorgeous.

Ladybird published two of these stories as individual books in 1992 but changed the titles. 'Hurrah for the Pepper-Pot' became Mrs Furrymouse and the Pepper Pot and 'The Funny Little Shadow' became Peter and the Magic Shadow.

I have the reprint single story version, and the illustrations are very much in the style of Beatrix Potter, so obviously someone else saw the similarities in the story! :D

I was hoping Tony would do the last Brockhampton Nursery Book. Eileen Soper's illustrations are gorgeous in colour and the stories are charming. Thank you.

Lovely illustrations - thanks for adding them Tony! One thing that struck me straight away with 'The Dear Old Snow Man' is that it features only boys - very unusual for a story of this type. Love Eileen Sopers work for it though, and for the other stories too. :-)

I must admit that looking at the cover I thought one of them was a girl, it was only when I started reading it that I realised all three were boys - I wonder if Eileen Soper thought the same as me!

What a lovely little book... I agree with Julie - Eileen Soper's illustrations are delightful. Looking at the story it rings very vague bells and I wonder if I ever saw this book many moons ago! I would love to come across any of this delightful series, but I suppose they are very scarce.

Oh gosh, not another Blyton biology blooper (boy and girl "identical" twins)...  But I agree, absolutely gorgeous illustrations — thanks again for all your work in making these available, Tony. It's wonderful to see more of Eileen Soper's artwork, especially in colour.

Another wonderful addition. Thanks, Tony.

I couldn't see that the twins were called 'identical' - only "that if they hadn't been dressed as a boy and a girl no one would have been able to tell one from the other." How was that a blooper, Courtenay?

You're right, they weren't described as "identical" — but Enid's statement that "if they hadn't been dressed as a boy and a girl no one would have been able to tell one from the other" makes it clear that they are supposed to be identical twins. Which is an impossibility for male and female twins.

I know I keep bringing this issue up, but I'm a pedant and it just keeps on bugging me!!!
