Secret Island - no wrapper £10.00 starting price.

Post by Rob Houghton »

I'm quite surprised no one has mentioned this, as I'm sure some people might be looking for a copy, even without a dust wrapper! It ends tomorrow, and still no bids!

£10 plus £2.90 postage. Doesn't look in bad condition at all. :-)

It finally went for £12.50 - amazing price! I'm having to reevaluate what people have said on here about The Secret Island being expensive and popular and difficult to get - £12.50 is amazingly cheap!

That was a good price :D . I must say The Secret Island wasn't a book I found expensive to buy, just very difficult to find. I paid £7 for my copy but finding one took months and months of searching!

My copy (1941- no dust jacket) cost me £3 from a second hand bookshop in Stratford Upon Avon - but that was maybe 10 years ago. 8)

Wow that really is a good price! I can't imagine getting a copy for that now other than maybe a paperback edition. Thinking about it, not many hardbacks of any of the Secret series (even without wrappers) show up much, unlike Famous Fives, Secret Sevens or Barneys which always appear.

It was very cheap, even back then! Especially in Stratford, which is notoriously expensive even in charity shops! This was an old second-hand bookshop run by two women, and their children's books were always quite cheap - I got a few Blyton bargains from there, including this unusual 1947 (book club) edition of 'Five Minute Tales' (which at the time Tony didn't even know existed!) for £3.00 also - with a very good dust jacket! :D

That sounds a marvellous shop! Exactly the sort I like to find to have a good rummage about in, never knowing what treasures might be stuck on the shelves :D . I've never seen that edition of that book before either! I like the look of the wrapper, I can easily imagine the other three having the same design but with a different colour.

Unfortunately it was taken over by new owners, and though they still profess to be a second-hand books shop most of the children's books are Deans and annuals and paperbacks. :-(

Yes most of the Blytons I see in charity shops and the not so good second hand bookshops are usually paperbacks or Deans. Makes me wonder if people have stopped donating original hardbacks in order to put them on ebay instead!
