I'm sure you'll achieve your dream one day, Pete, even if it's a dream not many here share...

It was a nuisance. An adventure was one thing - but an adventure without anything to eat was quite another thing. That wouldn't do at all. (The Valley of Adventure)

I still don't understand why anyone would want a set of books illustrated by Maxey.

Must admit, I'm never sure whether Pete loves her as much as he claims to or if he just does it to wind everyone else up. :P

Many thanks for all the interest in my quest to collect a complete set of Knight paperbacks in good condition illustrated by Betty Maxey.

Sixret especially has provided an excellent source of potential books from reputable online sellers.

Regards

Pete

Maybe I'm being a little bit biased, but I agree with Gary. These are the ones I grew up with. They're etched in my memory & the ones I associate with reading the F5 books when I was a young un! They may not be the best, but I have a soft spot for them. :D

I feel the same way. My sister had all the Betty Maxey covers - and they are very nostalgic to me - though I'm less keen on the internals.

I'm afraid I never liked the TV covers much (sorry Gary!!!) but that was just because I liked the Maxey covers so much (even though I never read a Famous Five in novel form as a child - which is why the internals are less familiar to me!!) :D

I also really identified with the Famous Five as depicted in the annuals - especially Smugglers Top and Mystery Moor. My Famous Five had flares and rode Chopper bikes! Its the annual depictions that are my biggest influence regards the Famous Five.

I've taken a while to accept Eileen Soper as the 'proper' Famous Five illustrator - I first saw them aged about 22 and by the age of 40 I'd pretty much accepted them, lol - but it took a while to get used to Soper's 'new' depictions of the characters.
'Oh voice of Spring of Youth
hearts mad delight,
Sing on, sing on, and when the sun is gone
I'll warm me with your echoes
through the night.'

Yes, that pretty much sums it up for me, Gary.
