I see that people have already started bidding with over 5 days still to go!! I've never understood why people bother to do that! Seems pointless to me, just to up the price constantly for several days!

This title with dj is rare. I won’t be surprised if the price reaches £50!

Completely agree...I'm sure it will go over £100, but I've never understood why people start bidding with six days to go - a bit ridiculous, as if they are just wanting to boost the price still further just so they can say they paid an astronomical price! I thought the idea of bidding was to attempt to get a book for the cheapest price possible?

Some people set the highest price they are willing to pay so that the system will bid on their behalf as soon as they find the item they want on Ebay even though the auction ends in 6 days time. Maybe they are busy people who don’t look at Ebay that often. So when others put their bids, the price will go up automatically. If there is a high demand for that item, the price will go up quicker because of more people put their bids.

Yes, obviously many people have their reasons...though I prefer to wait and hope no one will notice the item! generally, if no one bids on an item, it gets less exposure. I'm guessing that several bids on an item will get it more exposure to the public? Seems that way anyway!

I think partly it's to 'secure' an item. If a seller has bids they are less likely to withdraw and re-list if they realise they've put the starting price too low or change their mind when they see interest in the item than if there were no bids. If something has no bids and there's more than 12 hours left, a seller can remove it, but if there's bids they have to cancel them, which is more effort and could compromise their selling allowances on ebay so they'll think twice about it  .

Yes, good point.

I will sometimes bid for items early, but usually only if I think not many people will be interested. Early bids almost always result in more people placing early bids, and then more people and so on, so if its something I really want, I tend to lie low until the last minute. Even then, once you place a bid, someone else will nearly always respond, even if its the last hour and no one placed a bid until then! Weird how that happens. Sometimes I wonder if its the seller with another account or a friend who bids in order to push up the price!

I see it went for only £28.77. I thought this book with DW was all but impossible to find? Or is that just for a first edition?

Yes, I thought that too! I must admit I only bid once - took it up to £20 - but knew someone would outbid me, and I was glad for them to do so. I was reluctant to bid more because I have a second edition without a dust wrapper, and I love the very thick paper its printed on, and the chunky feel of the book, and wasn't really bothered about replacing it with a later edition just to get the dust wrapper!
