The Enid Blyton Society

Scarce Irish language version of an Enid Blyton book, with illustrations by Benjamin Rabier. Published in 1940 by Oifig and tSolathair, 57pp, hardbound in boards. There are some signs of wear to this copy: water damage and water marks/slight staining throughout and the stitching is a little loose on the lower part of the spine.

Gosh, if only I could read Irish Gaelic, I'd go for it! I knew there were some Blyton books translated into Welsh, but wasn't aware of Irish ones. €30.00 seems a pretty reasonable price for a book that presumably isn't easy to find, although it doesn't look to be in the best condition.

Are there any Blyton fans around who do speak/read Irish, by any chance?

Aha, I didn't know the Famous Five had gone Gaelic! I just ran "An Cúigear Cróga" through Google Translate and it turns out they are The Brave Five in Irish, which is a pretty good name and obviously preserves the alliteration. I doubt I'd get far trying to read the whole book, though, but thanks, Pete...

Interestingly, I notice Irish isn't among the list of translations of the main series of Famous Five books, so perhaps only the short stories have been done so far? (This one is Five and a Half-Term Adventure and they also have George's Hair is Too Long, Good Old Timmy and When Timmy Chased the Cat, as far as I can see from the website.)

Close, yes — it's just over £26 at the current exchange rate (I looked online). Do you speak/read Irish Gaelic, Sue, or any of the other Celtic languages?

I've got 'The Famous Jimmy' - one of Enid's strangest books in my opinion - well, the illustrations are strange anyway, as most of them are in yellow and black - as in the duck is completely yellow, a cat is completely black, and sometimes there's a table etc also completely yellow, with a yellow cat and a yellow food bowl etc! I think they were saving on coloured ink!

Some of the pictures are in what might be nearer to 'full colour' and these are quite nice. Its also unusual because its one long story with no chapters, and covers 58 pages!

Mine is the big version with the white cover - roughly 22 cm x 29 cm but I think there were smaller versions too.
