If I was collecting the White Spine editions I would consider this:

It is a lovely book, Pete. But I too don't collect the early white spine, I love the pictures of the latter spine books best. :)

I collect the white spines but £63 is a lot for a 5th edition even though it is in good nick.

I can see were you're coming from John.I would not pay thousands of pounds for this book, but if I was collecting them I would want copy in the best condition possible - similar to the one shown above.
On that basis the price seems good to me.

If you got all the early white spines for around the same price each (£60) you could have a decent collection for hundreds instead of thousands of pounds!

I would be interested to see if it is possible to locate a cheaper copy in similar condition?

If so,white spine collecting here I come! :D

I've got Run Away Together, Caravan, Kirrin Island Again, Camp and Trouble in white spines, all in very good wrappers and the most I paid was £40 for Caravan (3rd Impression 1949) and £35 for Trouble (2nd Impression 1950).

I bought my white spine Five Go Adventuring Again for £45.

Below is the description written by the seller:

No. 2 £45
Five Go Adventuring Again (White Spine)
5th Impression 1950 (1st edition published July 1943). Book (red boards) Good, but with name written on ffep. B & W illustrations. Dust Jacket of original design Very Good but price clipped. (Other titles listed on rear jacket flap are priced at 6/-)

The dust jacket is protected with protective sleeve.

So there must be a cheaper copy in similar condition lurking somewhere in this vast online market.

Stella & Rose. They tend to price their books higher than other sellers.

I agree. I bought my white spine 1950 edition of Five On A Treasure Island for £25 a few years ago.

I have a few white spine versions - a separate collection to my official Famous Five collection - which are all the illustrated spines.

Most of those I have were bought fairly cheaply. :-) I personally sell them for about £20 - £25 for a 1950 edition.

Sing on, sing on, and when the sun is gone
I'll warm me with your echoes
through the night.'

Those prices from John & Rob seem most attractive,

I did not realise you could get white spines in original wrappers in later impressions for such reasonable prices, thanks both for the info.

I think because the 1st editions are commanding prices in the thousands, around £60 for a slightly later version sounded really cheap!
