well, I've seen 'FIRST EDITION' on many a book, but when you click on it to read more, way down the bottom of their description it says '12th impression - 1972' etc. Also seen books advertised as 'with dust wrapper' and when you click on the link the wrapper is a 'very good photo copy'. You can buy these 'very good photocopied dust jackets' for £7 on eBay - without the book!

To answer the question about first editions of this book without a wrapper - here's one I spotted today -

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/1942-1st-Edit ... SwVCRZdms8

Much more than I would pay for any book, with or without a wrapper, whether it was a First or not!

My copies of the first eight Famous Five books with white spine djs. They are not first edition although I have those titles in first edition without djs. I also have later printing of H&S illustrated spine djs.

Scroll down and you'll see my copy of Secret Island with dj(ultra scarce online). It is 1947 edition although I have a copy of first edition without dj.

The other 4 titles in Secret series in djs. They are not first edition although I have the copies of the first editions without djs.

How about "First edition thus" — which is used to describe editions that just happen to be the first one with that particular cover, much later down the line than the actual first! :P

It was a nuisance. An adventure was one thing - but an adventure without anything to eat was quite another thing. That wouldn't do at all. (The Valley of Adventure)

I was about to say the same. Dean editions being listed as firsts is pretty elastic especially then they miss the word 'thus' in the title and only mention it somewhere down the listing.

If I had been interested in buying that Treasure Island first I would have looked at the photos in more detail. As it was I just checked the front image and spine against what was in the cave.
"It's the ash! It's falling!" yelled Julian, almost startling Dick out of his wits...
"Listen to its terrible groans and creaks!" yelled Julian, almost beside himself with impatience.

Lovely collection Sixret.Thank you for posting. I don't own any 'white spine' five's.I don't know whether to try and collect them all or not as they clash with my uniform 1950's onwards editions..

I have 3 white-spine Famous Fives (none first editions, but I'm honestly not bothered about first editions, unless they come along by accident!) but I also have the full set of Famous Fives with the illustrated spines (again - only a couple of first editions, which are the later ones - Sea, Billycock Hill, Finniston Farm and Demon's Rocks). The main thing I go for with these editions is making sure they have the coloured end papers and illustrations where applicable. I dislike the later black and white end papers and illustrations as they're never so clear and sharp.

I'm certainly hoping to collect the remaining white spine Famous Fives - to me they are a different 'set' to the illustrated spine ones, and I wouldn't mix white spine ones with illustrated spine ones - which is partly why I don't like collecting first editions.

I also have all the Famous Five annuals, plus the Famous Five Special and Famous Five Big Book both with wrappers, as well as a signed edition of Five Go To Smuggler's Top with illustrated spine dust wrapper, which is additional to my other illustrated spine edition of this title! :-)

Am I correct in thinking that Banshee Towers was only printed once (in hardback), so is only available as a first edition. Apologies if I'm mistaken.

I think you're right Nigel. Any hardback Banshee Towers will be a first edition... at least I have understood that to be the case. Mine cost £4.00 from a book sale (with d/wrapper) about 25 years ago.

I think I'm right in saying that a first edition can have several reprints but as long as nothing changes in the original published state, they are all first editions. So, technically, that edition of Treasure Island could be first edition, sixth or seventh impression.

As far as I'm aware, Banshee Towers is unusual, in that it was never reprinted in a hardback in its original version.
It was printed as a first edition hardback and wrapper, in 1961 and by the time of the second reprint all the Find Outer books had gone into paperback (the first EB books to do so, I believe?) so was never reprinted in hardback in any impression (until the later 1970's-80's versions with different wrappers).

1962 Armada, illustrations and cover by Dorothy Brook

This was just one year earlier than the Find Outers in paperback Rob,but I don't know if it's the earliest date a paperback was released? I think a couple of other titles were also released in paperback in 1962?
