Secret Island 1946

Post by Rob Houghton »

Anyone who wants a copy of this - snap it up now! Only £6.90 and free postage.

The cover is described by the owner as 'poor' - because it appears to be stained and marked. But the price is brilliant for this early edition! For some reason its listed as 'The Secret Garden' lol ;-)

It was a nuisance. An adventure was one thing - but an adventure without anything to eat was quite another thing. That wouldn't do at all. (The Valley of Adventure)

The cover looks blue I think.... the copy I got new in 1947 is yellow. How often were they changed I wonder?

Glad someone did - as I've heard so many on here bemoaning the fact its hard to come by! I guess maybe the stained cover put people off - but its still an extremely good price these days! Hope the cover isn't too bad!

My own personal copy (which I picked up in a bookshop in Stratford-on-Avon for £3 about 15 years ago) has blue boards. It's from 1941 - so maybe the boards just changed randomly, perhaps even the same editions.

I'm fairly sure mine is green, 1949.
"It's the ash! It's falling!" yelled Julian, almost startling Dick out of his wits...
"Listen to its terrible groans and creaks!" yelled Julian, almost beside himself with impatience.

I actually have that 1946 edition myself, and the boards are green!

Checking out my files I see I have described the 1946 copy as apple green and the 1949 one as dark green - it is also twice as fat as the very thin 1946 copy.

Yes - now you say that I can picture it more clearly. It is a darker green than the one on eBay and it's quite big as well.

Slight correction... mine is a reprint dated January 1947 and although it is rather yellow now, it may have been a pale orange years ago! I think one could call it "well loved" and of course long since lost its dust wrapper.

I wonder why the 1946 version was so thin? War standards? My 1941 edition (light blue boards) is very fat with good thick pages. :-D

We could always take our copies to B&Q and get the Pantone shade for true accuracy . We should also measure the books in width and height just to be accurate...

I don't have much time at all... it would just be like me to procrastinate by doing something like that, rather than shopping for a pram etc!
