Bound issues of Sunny Stories

Post by Rob Houghton »

I've never seen Sunny Stories bound in this way before - a proper old book, with gold embossed title to spine. Were these professionally bound? Interesting item, starting at £10 for 15 issues, 1942. 8)

I've never seen Sunny Stories bound that way but I have seen it with plenty of journals and periodicals. It would hopefully have protected them from the damage that seems common in the mags now.

I have a number dating from late 1939 that are bound, although the boards and spine are missing.

That's interesting. I wonder if the early issues were bound for a reason? Were they an amateur binding or do they have more significance, such as belonging to the publishers as file copies, or to someone else 'official'? Or were they commercially produced? I guess not, as there aren't that many around!

I got the impression (can't remember who from) that it was a fairly common practise for someone to get a collection of magazines bound, just as a way of keeping the magazines in good condition.

I think it was, but I've never seen Sunny Stories bound in this way - usually its adult magazines...but I guess some people did have them bound. :-)

Thank you, Rob. I have put my bid. I won't go more than £15. £1 for each magazine. I've bought all my Sunny Stories within the range of £0.5 to £3 each. :D

By the way, I have 3 bounds volumes.

1) Enid Blyton's Sunny Stories no. 292- no. 307 in fair condition. All intact but the spine is a bit loose. But the pages are all secured firmly.

2) Enid Blyton's Sunny Stories For Little Folks no. 159- no. 166 in a very good condition.

3) Enid Blyton's Sunny Stories For Little Folks no. 115- no. 121 in a very good condition.

Both volumes of Sunny Stories For Little Folks are almost like new! Even the colours of the boards are not faded! Only the spines are faded They have a very pleasant smell to boot!

I will take some photos if you want to see them.

I was thinking of bidding but also wouldn't go over £15. However, I will let you hopefully be the winner! :-D

In a way I'd rather have my Sunny Stories as separate magazines, but I thought it was unusual.

I see they also have EB Magazine bound issues, but as I already have all those issues, I don't want to bid on them. :-)

I suppose the one difficulty in buying bound editions would be getting a whole collection. People will likely have bound them in varying ranges of numbers so it would be hard to find one that started where the last one left off if that makes sense. Of course you could just overlap and have more than one copy of something, or some bound and some unbound if all you're aiming for is a copy of each edition.

I over think things, sometimes.

How much did it go for in the end?
