Real Fairies

Post by fordxcore »

Hi everyone! I'm a longtime browser of the forums, but first time poster. I was wanting an opinion on the above mentioned title. I was notified of a copy for sale via an emailed newsletter (link to listing below) and I have the money ready and waiting and I desperately want to purchase it, but thought I would ask the oracles on the forum what their opinion was of the book? And do you think the inscription is legitimate? My gut feeling is that it is. Though I've been collecting for a good 20 years now I'm still nervous about spending this much cash! I'd greatly appreciate your opinions before I jump in and buy it! Many thanks! :)

I've never known Enid Blyton sign a book as 'the Author'! This is definitely one for Tony! :D

Enid Blyton wouldn't have been in the habit of signing books as early as 1923, so it's not surprising that she wrote something a bit different!
"Heyho for a starry night and a heathery bed!" - Jack, The Secret Island.

"There is no bond like the bond of having read and liked the same books."

A scarce book in a good dustwrapper and definitely a 1st edition. The inscription is certainly in Enid Blyton's writing and is genuine. I have seen early books before that she has signed as 'The Author', but purely personally for a price of £630 I would want to see the author's name. I have absolutely no idea what 'L. of L.E.' means, perhaps someone else might be inspired by it!

I think "L. of L. E." means Lots of Love, Enid.

Thanks so much for your replies everyone! I also think it means 'Lots of Love, Enid' which I thought was rather sweet. I DID IT! I bought it. It's the most I've spent on a book for my collection so far. I even have one of those that was specially bound for her by the publisher that I'm sure you all know of, and I paid less for THAT! My goodness. I'm glad I bought it though.

I'm guessing it may be a copy of The Children's Life of Christ?

It is! How on earth did you know that! Have you been snooping on my shelf?

I did see that other copy for sale too, but just was so enamoured with the inscription on this one. I considered the other one though!

Well done on your purchase, fordxcore! £630 is a lot of money, but not if the book brings you a lot of pleasure & enjoyment! :D

Thanks Anita & Tony. I never knew Enid had signed any book as 'the Author'! You learn something new every day! :D

Real Fairies is a nice little book so I'm sure you'll enjoy it. I'm lucky enough that my library has a first edition (without the dustjacket) and as a staff member I've had it on loan for about four months now. I am finding it hard to take back!
"It's the ash! It's falling!" yelled Julian, almost startling Dick out of his wits...
"Listen to its terrible groans and creaks!" yelled Julian, almost beside himself with impatience.
