Betty Maxey Famous Five paperbacks

Post by Rob Houghton »

I sometimes wonder if I'm charging too much for a Famous Five hardback with dust jacket at £9.99 - £12.00 -- but then I see items like this...

'Oh voice of Spring of Youth
hearts mad delight,
Sing on, sing on, and when the sun is gone
I'll warm me with your echoes
through the night.'

Well, that one is the first-ever edition in paperback, with a Betty Maxey cover but still the Eileen Soper illustrations — the best of both worlds, if you like — so I'm sure it would be of significant interest to at least some avid collectors...

It was a nuisance. An adventure was one thing - but an adventure without anything to eat was quite another thing. That wouldn't do at all. (The Valley of Adventure)

Hah I collected those covers and paid between 99p and £1.50 for each of them.

If I was selling them these days, I'd maybe charge £2.50 each, but certainly not £12.00!

Give it a few more years so that it's even "rarer" and Stella & Rose will sell it for £120.00.

And that's for one that's merely "acceptable" and "a fair reading copy".
