Re: Enid Blyton card games
Well done, Billy.
I would love to have the "Find Out!" card game, but in its entirety, not as single cards!! Unfortunately there aren't any complete sets going on eBay at the moment, but I must remember to keep an eye out. I really like the illustrations in it, despite this one that makes Mr Goon look rather like he's turned into a "Mrs"...

It was a nuisance. An adventure was one thing - but an adventure without anything to eat was quite another thing. That wouldn't do at all. (The Valley of Adventure)

it's a really lovely set to have, but the card you cite above is awful, I agree. I wonder why it was passed?! I always assumed the illustrator was Lilian Buchanan, because the style is very similar, especially when compared to the cover illustration of Mystery of the Strange messages, and this card - which shows similar outfits for the characters - but surely she wouldn't have drawn Goon that badly?!

I also wonder why Inspector Jenks is called "Inspector Jennings" in the card game — a slip on the part of the designer, perhaps, or was there a real reason? Another mystery...

Re: Enid Blyton card games
There's at least one blooper on the Famous Five cards too. The 50s set has a card titled "something happens to Richard," while Anne is hiding up a tree. Of course, it's actually Dick who is being kidnapped. The 70s set titles that card "What's happening in the moonlight?" - more vague but at least not inaccurate, but has then used the "something happens to Richard" on a card which depicts Rooky taking a bundle of clothes to change by the well.

"It's the ash! It's falling!" yelled Julian, almost startling Dick out of his wits...
"Listen to its terrible groans and creaks!" yelled Julian, almost beside himself with impatience.

I suppose that's Richard as in Richard Kent, but on the other hand, Dick's real name is presumably Richard as well!Fiona1986 wrote:There's at least one blooper on the Famous Five cards too. Enid Blyton & Superintendent Stephen Jennings
During my research into the Bucks Constabulary I came across some interesting information with regard to one of the officers. Stephen Jennings joined the Buckinghamshire Constabulary on the 13th March 1923 as constable 199, he rose through the ranks reaching Superintendent in 1952....

Re: Enid Blyton card games
Ah, I think I had heard of the real Inspector Jennings before, but I'd forgotten! Thanks, Pete.
Still doesn't quite explain the choice of name for the card game, though — did they intentionally do it as a tribute to Jennings himself, or was someone on the Pepys design team aware that Jenks in the books was based on a real-life policeman called Jennings and the names got inadvertently scrambled?
