The Famous Jimmy

Post by Rob Houghton »

I've never seen this book with a dust wrapper before...but not sure what edition this is.

I have the 1947 edition, but it looks identical to the one pictured in The Cave, with white cloth spine, while this one has red cloth spine -

A bit expensive though! ;-) I've always thought it was a bit of a strange book, and I'm not a fan of the illustrations!

According to the sellers (our old friends Stella & Rose), it's the first American edition.

It was a nuisance. An adventure was one thing - but an adventure without anything to eat was quite another thing. That wouldn't do at all. (The Valley of Adventure)

I have three completely different editions of The Famous Jimmy, but the only one that I can lay my hands on at present is the very small one. 6 inches high, with no colour illustrations, just line drawings and printed on shiny art paper. It has a wrapper attached to the card cover, so the only loose things are the flaps. It is called a 'Fourth edition 1943'. Very cute!!

E.P. Dutton are an American publisher and all mine are by Muller.

That's interesting! Seems various editions were various sizes? My 1947 edition (fifth) is published by Muller and is quite a bit bigger than 6 inches - It's almost 11" x 9". :-) Mine has the (rather unattractively coloured!) coloured illustrations - some of them just in shades of yellow and some in 'full' colour - or something resembling full colour anyway! ;-)

Didn't a certain (ahem) "famous" authority on Enid Blyton once put forth his theory, on these very forums, that The Famous Jimmy was obviously Enid's inspiration for The Famous Five? :P

Lol! I don't remember that...but wouldn't be surprised! ;-)

I can quite easily see how a story about a duck and a cat would evolve into a story about four children and a dog having adventures... ;-)
